About Laser Skin Resurfacing

Skin resurfacing with Fraxel Dual or Fraxel Restore laser at Versailles Medical Spa is a noninvasive cosmetic procedure that utilizes pulsating beams of light to exfoliate dead and damaged skin one layer at a time. The procedure is performed to address facial lines and wrinkles and to minimize skin blemishes, like pigmentation, acne scars, and other flaws. Sometimes called a laser peel, fractional skin resurfacing is considered an ideal facial treatment for people who want clearer, softer, and youthful-looking skin. Depending on the condition of the skin, we can customize the laser accordingly. There is little recovery time associated with most laser skin resurfacing procedures. You can discuss any questions or concerns with our Darien, CT team during your consultation.

Types of Laser Treatments

There are three types of laser resurfacing skin procedures that are selected based on your skin's needs. Some are performed for milder cases of skin damage while others are more aggressive:

  • Ablative Laser Treatments
Ablative lasers eliminate thin layers of skin similar to a deep chemical peel or dermabrasion with a precision that allows the laser technician to reduce damage to the skin. Ablative lasers are ideal for firming the skin, as well as removing wrinkles and acne scars.
  • Non-Ablative Laser Treatments
Non-ablative lasers don't remove any skin — the light creates micro-damage to the skin cells to prompt natural skin healing. Non-ablative treatments are great for addressing fine lines and wrinkles on those who are willing to wait several months for strong results.
  • Fractional Laser Treatments
Fractional laser treatments are a combination of non-ablative and ablative that create small holes in the deep skin layers. The body's automatic healing leads to tighter skin. We may use fractional lasers to treat fine lines, deep wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, and uneven pigmentation.

Skin Resurfacing CANDIDATES

When choosing which laser procedure is right for your skin, we will consider multiple factors. Laser skin resurfacing is designed for patients who feel unsatisfied with their overall complexion. If you see sun damage, acne scars, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, or redness concerns, this procedure may help reduce your complexion issues. Also, it works well if you have rough texture, scaly patches, or other skin surface problems. Laser treatment isn't suggested for anyone who has very dark skin tones or active acne outbreaks. Also, it's important to understand that you will have some recovery time associated with your laser treatments. Some patients, depending on the condition of their skin, may require as much as 2 – 3 weeks for their skin to normalize.

If you are scheduled for a deeper or more intense laser treatment, we will ask you to use a retinoid cream for a few weeks before your laser procedure. The retinoid helps prep the skin for maximum results. Medication is given before the procedure to help reduce pain for greater relaxation during your appointment. If your complexion needs mild improvement, we can use a topical anesthetic to numb certain areas of the face. For your whole complexion or more intense laser treatments, you may need some form of sedation. During the procedure, you can relax in our treatment chair while the laser glides over the skin, precisely targeting the needed areas for improvement. You will feel the heat from the laser followed with cold air from the system's built-in cooling device. The laser works to destroy dead and damaged skin cells while also stimulating new collagen growth.

What to Expect

Following lighter laser treatments, a healing ointment is applied to the skin and you can return home for recovery. The treated skin may look pink, and you will experience some swelling and irritation. These symptoms subside in a few days, and the peeling process lasts over a 3 – 5-day timeframe. If you undergo a deeper laser peel, your downtime lasts longer. In some cases, we may protect your recently treated skin with dressings and the irritation, swelling, and burning side effects will intensify. We may prescribe pain medication to lessen these side effects. The downtime for a more intense peel may last 2 – 3 weeks. All patients need to limit their sun exposure after their laser treatment and use sun protection regularly. Regardless of the intensity of the peel, the skin will naturally flake, crust, and peel away. It's crucial to avoid interfering with the healing process to prevent scarring and to protect your skin from environmental exposure. Once the peeling is finished, your skin should feel smoother while also looking clearer, younger, and rejuvenated.
